The spring migration

A red-headed woodpecker at Point Pelee National Park

A few days at Lake of Bays in Muskoka, several mornings and evenings at Windsor’s Ojibway Prairie Complex, and an afternoon/evening at Point Pelee National Park. The highlight definitely being the red-headed woodpecker. I had read on the Pelee Facebook page that it was still being spotted on the Tilden Woods Trail near the visitor centre at Point Pelee, so I headed there but with limited hope. After all, it’s one bird and I had assumed it would be high up in the canopy if I did spot it. After an hour of no luck, I had chatted briefly with a couple also looking for the elusive bird. We both expressed our disappointment and parted ways. But the moment they were out of view the woodpecker swooped down right in front of me - at eye level just 15 feet away! I nearly panicked thinking i had but a second before it would fly off. But to my delight it stayed with me, flying from tree to tree, occasionally landing on the ground looking for worms, and never leaving the trail. Eventually, I was the one that left.
