Burwash Lake
In the spring of 1979 and 1980, my grandfather and a few of his fishing buddies, took a float plant to a fishing lodge on Burwash Lake, located 70km north of Sudbury.
The lake is only accessible by float plant or by an all-terrain vehicle via an old logging road. The lodge - one of only three deeded properties that are well separated and surrounded by crown land - was originally called Waldorf in the Wilderness. Owned by a business leader and entrepreneur who hosted associates and friends for fishing and hunting retreats.
The lodge was then sold and renamed Tranquility Bay Lodge. And after a combined 45 years with just two owners, the property was listed for sale, and it’s where I am finding this information. It is unclear when the property was listed for sale.
While I was scanning the 35mm colour positive slides from my grandfather’s archives, all that was written on the cartridge was “Burwash”.
A quick Google search led me an online listing with photos that showed the kitchen my grandfather is seen cleaning the fish in.
What a pleasure to unearth a little background information on my grandfather’s remote fishing getaway some 40+ years later.
