From the Star’s Taylor Campbell, ‘On Monday, city council voted unanimously to temporarily close Sand Point Beach, a popular summertime destination near a deadly shipping channel where a 15-year-old boy lost his life last month.
“We’ve set this fun thing up next to a black hole, and someone has to do something,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens. “If you’re not a strong swimmer and you take one step too far, you are now immediately over your head and pulled a little bit.”’

Counc. Angelo Marignani put forth a motion to accelerate an already approved a $15-million long-term plan to relocate the beach a short distance to the east. That was rejected and council approved waiting for a coroner’s report before revisiting the issue.
Nine people have drowned at the beach since 1986.
