Tariffs and the Auto Sector

As Trump’s tariff war continues, Canada’s auto sector once again took centre stage with Windsor as ground zero. A week before his ‘Liberation Day’ announcement, Trump put the car companies on notice with statements guaranteeing a 25% tariff on all imported vehicles. Less than a week later Trump made the auto tariffs the centrepiece of his White House press conference with the industry seeing no reprieve. Hours later Stellantis informed the union Windsor Assembly Plant, which employs 3,600 hourly employees, would be shut down for two weeks, adding that further changes to the production schedule are expected.
