The Demon of the Strait
The March du Nain Rouge returned once again to Detroit’s Cass Corridor on Sunday (March 23) to chase the red dwarf out of town. Hundreds gathered, most dressed in red and black and eccentric costume as they were led by a New Orleans marching band, dancing and drinking down 2nd Avenue towards the Masonic Temple.
The Nain Rouge (“red dwarf” in French) is an urban legend woven through pivotal moments in Detroit history. It is said the red demon appeared to the city’s founder, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who suffered financial ruin soon afterward. Further Nain "sightings" are said to have preceded disasters throughout Detroit’s history.
